I read, or rather listened to, the Revenge of the Sith novel and while it's still the same flawed story as the movie I think it's remarkable how much better Anakin is in the novel. I think it goes to show that what really is the simple solution to the prequels is that Lucas should have continued to let others write the script and direct (and probably have a say in casting).

Didn't read the novel but regarding the rest, you and I agree for once. Rogue One brought some of the great villain back, but overall he was only in it for 5 mins.

Yes, Lucas' involvement with everything was the main cause of them turning into turkeys. He isn't accomplished at all areas of filmmaking so there was no need for him to take on everything. Should have just focused on what he was good at and let other geniuses take his work to the next level.

The best Star Wars film Lucas directed was the first one, and he had one element in that, which was lacking in the prequels, and that is he was constrained, by money, time, and the studio. Those constraints made him more creative than he ever was in the prequels where he got everything he wanted, and he had "yes man" Rick McCallum as producer.

Yes exactly. Those constraints brought the best out of him (and I'll always give him eternal credit for that) and removing them brought out all the endless crap that was bubbling under the surface.

I think what happened with Lucas is that he got rich and then he got lazy.

Well, his wife also possibly played a role as well.

It doesn't help that after Star Wars, he hadn't directed a movie until... The Phantom Menace, over 20 years later.

To be fair, I do not think that they are going to retcon the ending of Wonder Woman. And I think that movie is better for it going there. And you can get away with retcons if it is done in a clever way. We all saw how Days of Future Past had and ate its cake too.
