There's not much you can do outside of Optimus and Bumblebee (unless you want to really take some chances, which Hasbro and Paramount probably won't have the guts to do.)
I think a lot of people who watch and enjoy Transformers films and aren't/weren't fans of the toys don't actually care too much about the characters outside of the most important ones like Optimus. It's not like a comics universe where it's quite possible for even a non-comics fan to be aware of and permanently remember the smaller characters like Falcon, Pepper Potts, Shuri, Wasp etc. And it would be criminal to forget anyone who's had a solo or the likes of Widow or Vision.

But I bet those same audience members would struggle to name more than a handful of Transformers or even remember them aside from the ones who look particularly distinct. I think even outside of execution skill, some concepts are much more/less well fitted to being a cinematic universe and easier/more difficult to develop that way.

Yeah, I agree. I sometimes ask my friends which robots they remember or like, and usually it's just Optimus, Bumblebee and maybe Megatron. Most people's first reaction to "who is your favorite character" are the human actors like Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, or Shia LaBeouf (they can't even remember their characters names.)

Also, they've killed off most of the popular and interesting characters from the lore. They can't do a spinoff about Starscream, Shockwave, Wheeljack, or Jazz at this point. It would be a lot harder to make a spinoff about someone like Huffer or Whirl, who were barley characterized in the cartoons and whatnot.

Strange, if it wasn't for me being a massive TF comic fan as a kid, i doubt i'd have gotten into all the films so much.

For one thing i'd LOVE To see MORE decepticons show up than star-scream and megatron time and time again. Where's the rest of the flyboys in star scream's group (Dirge, Thudercracker, Skywarp, Thrust and Ramjet)?
Why only one of the combiners so far (Devastator, where's the combaticons or the others)?
What about the predacons, the opposite # to the dinobots?

What of more of Soundwave's cassettes? We saw laserbeak, frenzy and ravage (all who died), but what of Rumble, Buzzsaw and ratbat?
For that matter, why have they not put in blaster (the autobot version of soundwave)?

As for other autobots, i'd love to see more of sideswipe and his brother, Kyp, Blur.. Heck, what of Ultra magnus?

I remember Sam Witwicky. That's about it. Otherwise I just remember them by the actors as you say lol. I don't think Transformers is suited to a cinematic universe for the general audience or even a persistent franchise. It's just difficult when all the non human (and the humans can only have so much influence) characters, both good and bad, are all massive robots. A top trilogy could have been possible for sure and I was surprised how much I liked the first one.

All that talk above actually gets me excited. I don't know if the GA would care about these specifics but I'd love if they could make a series of films exploring the above for fans like us if they could find someone to fund it. Make it a non-profit for a good cause lol.

I do agree that Transformers isn't ideal for a cinematic universe, but I would argue if the robots were characterized better than the series might be able to do more. Maybe not a full interconnected Marvel-style universe, but maybe more spinoffs and sequels. If the audience can walk away from a movie remembering a robot named "K-2SO" (he's generally the fan-favorite character of Rogue One), they can remember a robot named "Hound" or "Crosshairs". The problem is that the robots only get a handful of lines and they're basically just stereotypes and archetypes with nothing to build on. I also think the human characters need to have more meaningful interaction with the robots to make them more interesting.

I think it's harder as the equivalent would be if a Star Wars film had 10-12 named droids as important individual characters in a film. It's much easier to characterise and name a large amount of human characters than it is a whole bunch of large robots. Maybe it can be done, but with human characters there are no additional hoops to jump through and that's why we are getting an Infinity War film where even those who have difficulty keeping track will recognise most of the characters.

Yeah, that's a good point, it's definitely a lot more to balance.

It doesn't matter to me whether it was cancelled or not. After paying top price for a Cinemark XD seat to see $#!TFormers: Age of SuckStinkShun, they were never going to get another penny from me ever, ever, ever again.

Can you feel the love?

Does anyone really care, like or remember Micronauts? Why a shared universe with Micronauts of all things?
