Pokemon Go's latest update brought a number of new features to the game, including the ability to participate in Raid Battles. These Raid Battles work like most raids work in other online games - there's a boss and it needs to be defeated by a group of players.
In Pokemon Go, the Raid Battle are centered around a Pokemon with extremely high Combat Power (CP) and are rated between one and five (with one being the easiest and five being the hardest). The lower the Raid Battle rating, the easier the battle and the fewer friends you'll need to take it down.
The ratings are displayed as one of three eggs: Pink (Normal/Common), Yellow (Rare), and Dark (Legendary).
Each Raid Battle will allow you to bring six Pokemon and will be limited to 20 players (which means up to 120 Pokemon can be used against the Raid boss). The Battle System in the raid will be the same as it is at a normal gym and will be limited to 5-minute long battles.
The Raid Battles will allow you to capture the raid boss (the Pokemon you are battling), but only with Premier Balls that are obtained in raids. You will get more Premier Balls as you damage the raid boss, the amount depends on the following factors:
  • Who owns the gym: You get more if you're on the same team as the team that runs it
  • Damage inflicted by team: The team with the most damage inflicted on the boss gets a boost of Premier Balls
  • Damage inflicted by teams: The more damage your team gives, the higher amount of balls of Premier Balls
  • Damage inflicted by you: The more damage you give, the higher amount of balls of Premier Balls
In addition to being able to catch the Pokemon you are battling, the Raid Battles offer other items: Golden Razz Berry, a Rare Candy or a TM to teach your Pokémon new moves. In addition to this, you'll also get 3000 XP for completing a raid.
Data files found in Pokemon Go suggest that the hardest battles will offer 'Dark Eggs' which will give players an opportunity to catch Legendary Pokemon. These raids have yet to be encountered.

Seasoned Pokémon Go players are familiar with Pikachu occasionally popping into the game with new looks such as the Christmas and party hats it sported earlier this year, making the recent news of a “rare” Pikachu being added to the mobile game a plausible update. Over the weekend, we reported on the distastrous Pokemon Go Fest in Chicago, where thousands of paying ticket holders spent most of the day waiting in line and dealing with connection issues and bugs that made the game they were there to celebrate virtually unplayable.

Massively OP’s Andrew Ross did a piece for us yesterday outlining everything that went wrong and how frustrating it is for Niantic’s fans to watch it make mistake after mistake. During this year’s E3, Game Freak announced that they had a Pokémon game in the works for the Nintendo Switch. GameInformer’s latest issue features Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori and spoke about the game franchise, including what’s in store for Pokémon and the Switch. [Thanks, NintendoEverything.]

Masuda began, saying the following:
“What I’m really curious about, and really excited to see, will be the main way that people play the Switch. Will it be a home for the most part? Will it be out and about? I think that’s really going to depend on where the person lives, maybe. Depending on the country, maybe the main style of playing will be different. As we’ve been saying a lot, we always focus on, when designing the games, thinking about how the player is going to enjoy it, and what kind of experiences they are going to have. I’m really just kind of excited to see where the main style of playing is going to land.”
Masuda also added that “playing it at home is kind of a little bit different than the portable systems we’ve made games for up until now.”

Ohmori had this to say in regards to the Switch:
“It definitely is really fun to see that, but at the same time, it is definitely a lot of pressure, so we’re going to do our best to create a great game that answers those expectations.”
You can watch the interview with both Masuda and Ohmori in the following video.

The Pokémon Company recently revealed Lycanroc’s third form, called “Dusk Form,” for Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. Here’s a new trailer and more details on the Lycanroc Form.

Here are the official details on Dusk Form Lycanroc:

A Unique Look and Attitude
Dusk Form Lycanroc shares some of the aspects of Midday Form, such as a four-legged stance and obedience toward its trusted Trainer. But it’s also like Midnight Form—at the moment it attacks, its eyes turn red! Around its neck are four rocks like those of Midday Form, while the mane on its head matches that of Midnight Form.

Little things don’t shake the tranquil demeanor of Dusk Form Lycanroc, but it has a well of intense fighting spirit hidden within, and as a result, it relishes combat at close quarters. It also tries to use Counter when battles get intense.
A New Battle Formation
The moves that Dusk Form Lycanroc can learn also seem to reflect the characteristics of both Midday and Midnight Forms. Dusk Form Lycanroc learns both Accelerock and Counter—moves favored by Midday Form and Midnight Form Lycanroc, respectively.

Accelerock is a Rock-type physical move that always goes first. In Pokémon Sunand Pokémon Moon, only Midday Form Lycanroc could learn this move. Midday Form could learn this move when it evolved from Rockruff. Counter is a Fighting-type move that inflicts double the damage received by an opponent’s physical attack. In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, Midnight Form Lycanroc learned this move when it evolved from Rockruff.

Dusk Form Lycanroc has the Ability Tough Claws, a different Ability than either Midday Form or Midnight Form. Tough Claws greatly increases the power of moves that make direct contact. A Dusk Form Lycanroc with this Ability would likely favor a different style of battle than Midday Form or Midnight Form.
Get Dusk Form Lycanroc!
Only special Rockruff can evolve into a Dusk Form Lycanroc, and neither this Rockruff nor Dusk Form Lycanroc can be caught in normal gameplay. But you can get a special gift of this Rockruff as an early purchase bonus with Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon. Players will be able to receive a special Rockruff that can evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc via Nintendo Network from Friday, November 17, 2017, until Wednesday, January 10, 2018. Evolve this special Rockruff and have an adventure in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moontogether with your Dusk Form Lycanroc!

You’ll be able to get this Rockruff only for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon. Details on the ways to get this special Rockruff will be announced soon, so keep checking back for more information on it and on the upcoming Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon games, launching November 17 for systems in the Nintendo 3DS family.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon release on November 17, 2017 for Nintendo 3DS.

Game Freak Discusses Pokémon Designs, Their Approach To Evolutions, And More . August 11, 2017 . 8:30am

In a new interview, Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda spoke about various topics regarding how the team creates Pokémon designs, including what the rules are for creating a Pokémon, and much more.

Game Informer has shared its latest piece of its Pokémon coverage following its trip to Game Freak’s offices over in Japan. This newest published piece features Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda discussing various topics regarding how the team creates Pokémon designs, what the rules are for creating a Pokémon, on if designs are ever thrown out, and more.

First off, in regards to what rules there are for what Pokémon can and can’t be, Masuda said this:
“One thing we always really pay attention to is treating them like living creatures so you have to try and imagine where it would live in the environment and why it looks the way it does, what would it eat? When designing Pokémon, and not just from a graphic design perspective, there must be a reason for why it looks the way it does and you have to think about why it might live in the Pokémon world.”

Next, Masuda explained that Pokémon designs are rarely thrown out entirely:
“Once you’re in the middle of creating it and someone were to say, ‘No!, that’s not a Pokémon,’ and the design process gets killed? That doesn’t really happen that much. Usually, instead, maybe the person who is directing the game might say it won’t work in its current form, but maybe if you did this and adding ideas onto it might make it work better.”

In addition, Masuda also had this to say in regards to the evolutions of Pokémon:
“One thing that happens a lot – well, not a lot – but happens sometimes, is that you start out with a cat, and when it evolves one easy idea is to say, ‘Okay, now there’s more heads.’ We always want to make sure we think, ‘Why does that happen?’ And when it evolves, why does it have three heads? So that’s just something we’re always trying to think of – what’s the reason for what changes and how it looks?”

Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda Says Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire Were The Hardest To Make. August 15, 2017 . 9:30am

In a new interview with Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda, the Pokemon director/producer discussed the stress from working Ruby & Sapphire interfered with his health.

Continuing its Pokémon coverage during this month, Game Informer has shared another interview with Game Freak. This time, co-founder and Pokémon director / producer Junichi Masuda was asked what entry in the Pokémon series of games was the most challenging to work on.

Masuda noted that Ruby & Sapphire, which released back in November 2002, were the most difficult, and said the following:
“With Ruby and Sapphire, the screen got a little longer and it was a different aspect ratio, a lot more colors and sound channels so the tech was improved dramatically. It allowed us to do a lot more and gave us more freedom, but at the same time it made it take a lot longer to do things and was more resource-intensive.”
“After Gold and Silver came out, it was a huge hit around the world, but shortly after everyone was saying, ‘That’s it. The Pokémon fad is over! It’s dead!’ It was a very stressful project, for sure. When we were first developing it, I had the idea in mind that it would be Ruby and Sapphire, and then the next games, including the titles, would be Diamond and Pearl, and in between we would do the remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen, so we could create this structure where you could take the Pokémon from the Kanto region to the Diamond and Pearl games.”
According to Masuda, he developed health issues due to stressing over the franchise and the idea that it was on a downtrend. However, these fears were assuaged with the release of Ruby & Sapphire when Masuda saw people lining up to buy the game.
“At the time, the atmosphere and general thinking was that the Pokémon fad was over and there was huge pressure to prove people wrong. The next time I visited it was all Star Wars. Everyone was saying it was on a downtrend, the fad’s over and I really felt that pressure to make something amazing.”
“I got really stressed out and had to go to the hospital and had some stomach issues and had to get a camera inserted and they didn’t know what it was – very stressful. The night before release I had a dream that it was a complete failure, a total nightmare.”
“We at Game Freak took that as a challenge and said, ‘It’s not dead. We’re going to show you guys you’re wrong!’ The morning after, the day of release, I went into the local shop and saw people lining up to buy it and was extremely relieved. It was close. Super scary at the time.”
Game Informer also asked Shigeru Ohmori, director of the 3DS remakes and of Sun & Moon, what his time was like working on Ruby & Sapphire, as well as the remakes.
I kept hearing from Masuda about how hard the original Ruby and Sapphire games were and I kind of had that pressure in mind while creating Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby. But from my perspective, it was a lot of fun to work on them, so I was super motivated to work as the director on the remakes.”

Game Informer has published its latest interview with Game Freak during their month of Pokémon coverage, and this time co-founder, director, and producer Junichi Masuda and Pokémon Sun/Moon director Shigeru Ohmori discussed their favorite Pokémon spin-off titles.

Masuda replied that his favorite was Pokémon GO, though he then noted he wasn’t sure if that could even be counted as a spin-off. As for Ohmori, he went with Pokémon Snap, saying that one of the best parts of the N64 title was being able to print out the in-game photos.

“I played a lot of Pokémon Snap. I got really into it,” Ohmori said. “The most fun part for me – this may have been a Japan-only thing – but you could take your game to a convenience store and print out the photos you took and could use them like stickers and put them on things. I just had a lot of fun being able to take the photos in the game and print them out as things that I could use.”

The devs were then asked what kind of Pokémon spin-offs they’d like to see in the future. Masuda said the following, referencing Rhyhorn Racing from Pokémon X/Y:
“It’s kind of an Easter Egg from X and Y, but Rhyhorn Racing was a thing in that world. There might be a message in there that I really want to create Rhyhorn racing.”

As for Ohmori, he replied that he would like to see a “2D side-scrolling” action game:
“I really want to try working on a real action-focused game. Of course, we’ve kind of got those already with fighting games as well so it’s hard to say what it would be. Like a 2D side-scrolling action game, maybe.”
